Walter Hembry Hawkings [1874-1955] and Helen Mary Duckett [1882-1958]

They were married in 1902 in Blackford, Wedmore – where Helen came from, daughter of George and Rosa Maria Duckett, farmers.

He was musical, playing the banjo and composing his own songs.

In 1914 Kelly’s Directory he is listed as private resident, 20 College Street (not in the commercial section).

Walter ran a business in Burnham making and dealing with bicycles, motors and other things, the Hawks Motor and Cycle works, on the corner of Victoria Street and College Street – see the Capture Burnham website.

Walter lived until the age of 82 and was a member of the church choir until the end of his life. Helen lived a little longer and died in Weston-super-mare.

In his will dated 1955 his address is given as “The Moorings”, Stoddens Road, Burnham on Sea and he is described as “Rate Collector”.

Their daughter Irene never married, and died in 1992, in Burnham, her address then was Hill View, 36 Berrow Road, Burnham on Sea.
